We
raise Muscovy Ducks. Muscovies originate in South
America and are the only domestic duck not derived
from mallards, making them quite unique.
Muscovy
are excellent foragers, feeding mostly on
vegetation, slugs, insects and
small vermin. They come in a variety of colors. We
have chocolate, black, blue, and piebald (with
white).
Muscovies make great pets and barnyard additions.
They are very interesting and pleasant ducks to have
about, being calm, personable, tame, and intelligent
birds. Muscovies do not quack like waterfowl, but
rather quietly coo and hum. Unlike typical
waterfowl,
Muscovies
are generally not as fond of water baths, making
them less messy than dabblers. Also, because they
have claws on their feet, they can roost like
chickens. They are easily trained to a routine and
make excellent egg-sitters: they will hatch out
chicken or even turkey eggs. They take excellent
care of their young. We allow our Muscovies to hatch
out and completely raise their own young to
adulthood
on free-range pasture. To date, they have never lost
a single one of their ducklings!
Muscovy
ducks are the Ultimate Meat-duck. Unlike that of
other
domestic ducks, Muscovy meat is not greasy,
is lower in fat and is more like veal than poultry.
Males are about 15 pounds and females average 8 lbs.
Muscovy is prized in French restaurants. They are
excellent
layers,
laying large cream-colored eggs even in the winter
months!
